Abstract

Despite Hong Kong being a modern, urban metropolis, decisions about building in the city are still deeply influenced by Fung Shui. One specific idea is that sharp corners are considered to detract from the energy (Shui) of the room. Light Space Modulator Hong Kong uses light sensors to detect sharp corners, projecting light into them in order to make them appear soft. The corners are then 3-D scanned using photogrammetry. Because of the light projections, the scan miss-reads the sharp corner and creates a digital image of a soft one. This image is then reprojected into the corner, and scanned again, beginning a feedback loop where the corner is repeatedly misread and visually softened through projections. The device aims to provoke thought and conversation around factors which alter our perception of a space.
